Distance Learning for Students on the Autism Spectrum: Just Keep Swimming

We are all swimming against the tide as we reimagine schooling during the pandemic. But the waters are especially treacherous for students on the autism spectrum, most of whom cannot tolerate unexpected change, depend upon continuous provision of related services, and live by internal rules that dictate when, where, how instruction may be delivered. These students and their families are drowning. Here are some strategies families can use to help their children on the spectrum keep swimming, keep calm, and keep learning.

Making Friends at School

Most child development milestones are monitored closely by parents from a very young age: Can my child walk? Check! Use a cup to drink? Check! Jump on one foot? Recite the ABCs? Check and check! Then there are child development “soft skills”—social and emotional skills that can be harder to judge and even more challenging to teach.
